Volunteering at Rex Healthcare

Rex VolunTEEN Program

The VolunTEEN program at Rex provides an opportunity to learn, the possibility to share and the chance to care. Members of the AFTER SCHOOL and SUMMER VolunTEEN programs are given the opportunity to work in a variety of positions that provide an important contribution to the care of our patients and guests at Rex Healthcare. Each VolunTEEN will be provided with a number of tools to help him/her develop successfully as a volunteer.

VolunTEEN program facts and requirements:
• Rex Healthcare's VolunTEEN Program is a structured program designed to provide teens ages 14 (as of August 1 for after-school program; as of May 1 for 10-week summer program) and above with opportunities to contribute to his/her community in a setting that might stimulate interest in a medical career. In addition, the program provides teenagers with practical experience and practice in developing good work habits as well as allowing the teens to make unique contributions to the healthcare team.
• VolunTEEN assignments are based on information provided by the teen during the interview process and may include areas such as patient care units, day care, Recovery Room, office support assignments and more. Teens accepted in the summer program will receive an assignment for the scheduled ten weeks. Teens accepted in the After-School program will be assinged a position for the entire academic school year (September -- May).
• Members of the VolunTEEN staff are required to volunteer one day per week, Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. during the after school program. During the summer, students work one day a week for a four hour shift. In keeping with our goal to promote good work habits, teens are required to report to work on time as scheduled with planned absences, including vacations scheduled well in advance. Teens will be required to make up missed workdays.
• VolunTEENS are not allowed to leave the hospital campus during work shifts without written permission from their parents or guardians.
• VolunTEENS are not allowed to smoke while volunteering at Rex.
• In keeping with our positive and professional staff image, VolunTEENS are required to wear a uniform that consists of a burgundy golf shirt embroidered with the Rex logo, khaki long pants and Rex ID badge. Denim and shorts are not allowed.
• Rex Healthcare's policy on family members working together prohibits teens whose parents work at Rex to be assigned to areas where their parents would have supervisory responsibilities for them or for work performed by the VolunTEEN staff member.
